This is the updated version of my wendy deck, as i played Night of the Zealot with her alone on Standard Difficulty. I did it twice and it went really well.

Why Wendy

Wendy is a very powerful character, as her actions are very efficient. Her special ability basically allows you to succeed on any test, if your chances are good. For example when playing on standard difficulty, if you're at +2 (like taking a test (3) you're skill is (5)), only 3 out of 16 chaos tokens result in fail (-3, -4 and auto fail). If you draw one of them and use her ability, chances are extremely low to draw one of them again.

Basic Strategies

This deck relies on combos, so if you don't draw many cards early to get them going, you won't get far.

This deck relies on 3 combos to function:

  • Use Baseball Bat with Hard Knocks to kill enemies. Never evade, unless you can't kill them.
  • When investigating, commit item assets at difficult locations shroud 3+ (wendys amulet, rabbits foot, flashlights) and recover them with scavenging at easy locations (shroud 1)
  • Gain ressources for hard Knocks with Burglary at shroud 1 or 2 locations. Use Scavenging with Burglary to recover items

Advanced Strategy

  • Use the skillcards (Guts, etc) as early as possible, to draw cards, so you get your combos going
  • Do not play Wendy's Amulet. Commit it to skill checks and recover with Scavenging.
  • You can play Scavenging twice, to recover more items.
  • Don't evade enemies, it's a waste of actions. Kill them when possible.
  • Try to get back items back from the discard pile as fast as possible, as Abandoned and Alone will make them unreachable.
  • Use Backstab when you don't have a weapon. Once you do, use it only on enemies with 3 or 5 HP.
  • You can commit items to other tests than investigating (like will, speed, etc) and recover them later with Burglary and Scavenging at shroud 1 locations
  • For wendys ability, try to discard only useless cards or items (like Emergency Cache, if you have enough ressources or Flashlight, if you've discovered all clues of the scenario).
  • You can investigate a location with no clues on it, to trigger Scavenging

Starting hand

Mulligan as many cards as possible, if you don't have Leo De Luca, as the extra action wins games by itself.

Scavenging only pays off once you've got of items in your hand or discard pile, so don't keep it in starting hand.

First Scenario

  • First scenario is very easy, i didn't burn the house. Leo is better than Lita anyway. I got only one of the two bonus monsters, the other didn't spawn.
  • Gather all clues for bonus XP.
  • 9 XP possible: 2 for (attic and cellar), 2 for Ghoul Priest, 1 for Icy Ghoul, 1 for Flesh-Eater, 2 for scenario and 1 for not burning your house (the special ghouls might not spawn). I got 8 XP.

Upgrade: Leo De Luca (2x 1 XP), Lucky! (2x 2 XP)

Second Scenario

  • For second scenario, i got 5 of the 6 cultists, before i had to resign on last turn. But i got all clues on "victory" locations, including the asylum (my not spawn, however).
  • Don't gather clues on Rivertown or Your House.
  • Enter new locations with first or second action, so you can gather all clues in the same turn. This way, Locked Door will go to Your House and Obscuring Fog won't matter.
  • Kill enemies with doom on them, to prevent the agenda from advancing earlier than neccessary.
  • Before killing cultists, gather clues on all victory locations. Cultists you didn't get will return in next scenario, but locations won't.
  • Gather clues in this order: Miskatonic University, Graveyard (recover items with scavening for high shroud locations), check Downtown. If it has victory 1, gather; otherwise ignore. At last go to Northside.
  • Use clues to spawn cultists as soon as possible, but only take the cultists out, if they're on your way, while gathering clues on victory locations. Once you got all victory locations, get cultists, then gather clues on other locations to get more cultists.
  • Try to get at least 4 cultists before resigning
  • Don't let the second agenda advance, or you'll lose two cards in scenario 3!
  • 11 XP possible: 4 locations (Downtown may not spawn), 7 XP for 6 cultists). I got 10, one cultist got away.

Upgrade: Replace 2x Flashlight with 2x Will to Survive (2x 3 XP), Replace 1x Rabbit's Foot with 1x Elder Sign Amulet (3 XP), If you got 3 XP left, replace Leather Coat with Bulletproof Vest

Third scenario

  • It was very close, but i managed to win on last turn before the boss would spawn. Will to Survive managed to save the day.
  • When you discover Arkham Woods that use will or speed for investigate, remember that his also influences Burglary.
  • Second agenda adds a weakness to your deck (permanently) if you fail a will (6) test, so save cards for this test (like Guts and Lucky!).
  • Kill enemies quick, or the cultist chaos token might give you problems with doom (can't add doom to a monster if they're all dead)

Sneak Attack is listed in your strategies, but is not in your deck.

Oh sry, i meant backstab. Mistake corrected.

What is the knife for? Just to commit as an item you can recover with scavenge? Wendy will not kill anything with it

Jan 04, 2017 Django · 4879

Yes, it's just to commit. It's the first item to replace. However in case you don't draw a weapon, it's for emergencies.

Maybe a second Leather Coat is more effective, as it also features a "fight" icon.

Do we actually want to play rabbit's foot or leather coat?

Jan 08, 2017 Django · 4879

You don't play any of the item cards except Baseball Bat and the Elder Sign Amulet (scenario 3). You only commit them to skill tests and recover them with Scavenging as needed, to commit them again.

Should you run low on health, you can certainly play Leather Coat (or recover it with Scavenging and play it). In one game i played the same Leather Coat three times, as i took lots of damage (Hunting Shadow).

As for the Rabbit's Foot, it's much better to commit for skill tests, so you don't play it ever. Wendy also doesn't fail any test if you play it right (see paragraph "why wendy"), so you could never use it's effect anyway. On the third scenario you should play the Elder Sign Amulet, so her neck slot is already occupied.

Thanks, awesome build. Will try.

So I just played this build and died in the third scenario, but managed to get 4 cultist because I had to resign in the second one.

The main issue I had was getting Leo de Luca early. I usually mulliganed 3-4 cards and didn't get leo in my starting hand once. The second issue I had was getting Scavenging to trigger often enough. Without having flashlight or commiting skills, I rarely succeeded by two even against shroud 1-2. Against shroud 3 or 4, I often spend 2 cards and barely managed to get the clue. Seems kinda dicy, but I will try this build again in the future for sure.

Leo is a very powerful card. I played the whole campaign 2 times with this deck and the last scenario a third time, with focus on killing the boss and not gatheriny any clues. In most games i had leo on my starting hand or got him very early, so i guess i was pretty lucky.

Only on the last game i drew him half way through the game and it was difficult to hold on to the ressources/cards, that i wanted to keep. I needed to spend many on immediate threats.

Investigating in shroud 3+ locations can get rough if you don't have the right cards in hand. So it's important to stock up on cards early on, so you can commit them to investigate checks and recover them at the same time.

How do you reliably trigger scavenging and succeed investigations by at least +2?

Jan 10, 2017 dcjoker · 13

This might be one deck that opportunist might work in.

Jan 13, 2017 Django · 4879

The cost to make Opportunist actually work is just too high in my opinion. For me, other card have higher priority, so i wouldn't know what to remove for it anyway.

You can't reliably use scavenging at shroud 3+ (though it's nice if it works), that's why you should wait with investigating low shroud locations once you got many items with investigate boosts in your discard pile (like Rivertown and Graveyard). Also, you can investigate locations without clues to trigger Scavenging (even without Burglary).

Seems a bit strange to have baseball bat as a core asset in a scavenging deck. You cannot use your flashlight if you have baseball bat.

Jan 22, 2017 Django · 4879

Flashlight is for committing not playing in this deck, mostly.

However you must decide on a case by case which way is better. If you don't have many cards with investigate symbols and can avoid combat for a 2-3 turns, you can play the Flashlight, use it up (maybe Scavenging the Baseball Bat you discarded by doing so) and when the flash is empty, play the bat again.

That's the great thing about Scavenging, it gives you more options, as discarded items are not lost (unless you draw wendys weakness).

Quick question: did you play this on Hard or Standard?

I'm mostly wondering how Wendy's underwhelming books (and no way to raise them) work with the harder chaos bag.

Jan 25, 2017 Django · 4879

I played on standard (updated description to reflect this).

I haven't tried the game on hard with any character yet, but regarding wendys investigation rating, i also suspect you'll run into trouble. HOwever it might be possible to win, if you only investigage shroud 1-2 locations. HOwever you'll miss out on some victory points this way.

Would you use the same build in a non-solo game?

Mar 02, 2017 Django · 4879

Generally speaking, "stand alone" builds can be played well in groups, as they can handly any threat thrown at them. This way, other characters don't have to waste actions coming to your rescue.

I've played her like this in a 2 and 3 player game. She's pretty good on her own, as long as you don't fight too much (when low an ressources) and avoid high shrouds, as Scavenging won't help you at these. However you can help other investigators to clear high shroud and then recover cards at low shroud, later.

Sep 26, 2017 TGrizzleD · 1

This may be a dumb question, but for cards like Hard Knocks are you able to activate its ability as many times per skill test as your resources will allow? I've been playing it where you can only use a card like that once per skill test.

Sep 26, 2017 Django · 4879

There's no limit to Hard Knocks or talents like Scrapper. There's only a limit if it explicitly says so, like Blood Pact or cards that exhaust on use.

hi just played with this deck first 2 scenarios of forgotten age and it was a blast. great deck.

Aug 16, 2019 Django · 4879

Thanks, good to know this old deck stil has it's uses. There's a lot of cards that make it a lot better, like the fail to win combo, Newspaper and Guiding Spirit.

Newspaper boosts Burglary, if you have no clues.

Found this deck and decided to give it a try as I've never given Wendy much of an honest try before and true soloing was hit and miss in the past. First scenario died last turn before killing the goul priest. Realized a made of ton of errors so I started a new campaign and gave it another go. 8 XP from first scenario, I was pretty stoked! I was following the recommended upgrades as well. Second scenario didn't go as well as I'd like as I only got 3 cultists, 7 XP from that one. Was worried going into the last one as I've struggled with it in the past and this time was no exception. I was running around try to deal with doom tokens on enemies while getting clues. Umordhoth spawned as at the ritual site and I had the other 3 cultist waiting on the main path, I was in the woods.Managed to pull it out on the last turn before Umordhoth finished me off with a luck Backstab draw from a guts use

Such a fun deck with great combos. Will definitely try again in the future, maybe on the Return To sets
