If you grew up during the 1980s, you probably remember the hit CBS tv show Magnum, P.I. staring Tom Selleck. This Joe Diamond deck is based off that show. For eight years, Thomas Magnum, a private investigator in Hawaii, took on various cases for money and helping people down on their luck. Magnum often had to depend on this close friends to pull him out of sticky situations and bail him out of trouble with the law. These friends included:

Jonathan Quayle Higgins III, the majordomo of the Robin Masters estate in Hawaii. Later the show revealed Higgins to actually be the famous novelist Robin Masters. For this deck, the role of Jonathan Higgins will be played by Dr. Milan Christopher.

Theodore Calvin, known to his friends as T.C., is a buddy of Magnum's from the Vietnam War and moved to Hawaii to run a helicopter tour business. He often had to procure supplies for the struggling Private Investigator and frequently loaned him money. The role of T.C. will be played by Charles Ross, Esq.

Rick Wright, another friend of Magnum's from the Vietnam War, moved to Hawaii and ran the King Kamehameha Club on the island. He provided contacts for Magnum that helped him get out of troubling situations with the law or shady other characters. The role of Rick Wright will be played by Dr. William T. Maleson.

Not in this deck due to space is Zeus and Apollo, the trained guard and attack dogs that patrol the Robin Masters Estate owned by Jonathan Higgins. They would have been played by Guard Dog.

Notes about the deck:

  1. The Hunch Deck was built around gathering clues with Working a Hunch and Scene of the Crime. I thought about putting Evidence! in the Hunch Deck but it seemed too situational since I might not have an enemy engaged with me. I included card draw/scrying with No Stone Unturned and Preposterous Sketches. Finally, I included a small amount of healing with Emergency Aid for the allies and main investigator should it be needed.

  2. Joe Diamond, aka Thomas Magnum, suffers from low willpower and agility with 2 being the base stat. I have tried to include cards like Tooth of Eztli treachery skill tests, Guts, and Manuel Dexterity to lessen the consequences of those tests.

  3. The allies, based off Magnum's friends, each play a unique function for the deck. Dr. Milan Christopher help Magnum with investigation tests and resources. I am not playing the Taboo version of Milan. Charles Ross helps lower the cost of the numerous items in your deck, and William Maleson can help get you out of dangerous treachery cards if you have the clues to spend.

  4. Since I am not playing Taboo, I included the Machete since it is a really nice level 0 item, the .45 automatic is here because it is similar to the type of weapon Magnum carried on the tv show, Magnifying Glass and Flashlight are to help with investigating for clues and they are "tools" which will work nice with the Detective's Colt.

  5. Emergency Cache is there for resources since cards like .45 Automatic and Dr. Milan Christopher are expensive. Deduction and Inquiring Minds are to help with skill tests, and vicious blow is to help give a little more killing blows to the big enemies

  6. I built this deck purely for fun in capturing the spirit of one of my favorite tv shows growing up. I have never tested this deck....yet. I may give it a try on easy-mode with Night of the Zealot to test out the kinks in a few weeks. I would greatly appreciate your advice/comments. My card pool is limited at the moment up to The City of Archives in the Forgotten Age cycle.
