Monterey Jack Loves To Cheese
- Difficulty ★★☆☆☆
- Enemy Management ★★★☆☆
- Clueing ★★★★★
- Encounter protection ★★★☆☆
- Survivability ★★★★☆
- Economy ★★★★☆
- Card Drawing ★★★★★
With this deck you can:
- Grab 3 clues in one action with Deduction or Pilfer
- Do 3 damage in one action with Backstab
- Succeed by exactly 3 to cheese bonus clues with Alton O'Connell and Antikythera
- Move 3 times using Nimble
Strategy: Monterey the Cheese Man is the most fun when he's built as an agility master, who can also use his intellect on the side using Higher Education. He'll be at 7 agility with stat boosts from Alton O'Connell and Hiking Boots, which will allow him to easily succeed at getting clues using agility focused assets and events. Adjust your skill value with Steady-Handed and Artistic Inspiration to get that succeed by three value and let the deck grab those extra clues! Optionally, if you need to fuel Higher Education - succeed by two instead and enjoy the extra economy and healing.
Enemy Management: In addition to evading literally enemy you want, Monterey has a lot of great enemy management tools with Backstab and his signature Trusty Bullwhip.
Clueing: Use assets like Surgical Kit and Forensic Kit with high agility to investigate any location! Draw through your deck rapidly and reply your best burst clue cards like Pilfer and Deduction.
Card Draw: Two Lucky Cigarette Case start your draw engine, but you have natural card draw from Monterey's ability. Cryptic Research is your best friend, be greedy with it so you can cycle your best events and skills.
Economy: There isn't a lot in the deck because Monterey's ability and Thieves' Kit gives the economy you need! You will loop your deck quickly enough to play Faustian Bargain when you need it.
0 / 3 XP: See the 3 XP Deck linked here.
This deck works best as a flex leaning cluever in 3-4 investigator games.
If playing 1-2 investigators, make the following swaps:
- Perception 2 in place of Deduction 2
- Intel Report in place of Pilfer
The big clue events and skills are useful for clearing locations with a high number of clues, and won't be as useful in lower player counts. You can usually get 2 clues per action with Alton O'Connell or Antikythera , so the 3+ clue events aren't as useful.
I like this, really cool! I really like Pilfer and Backstab on Monty, and Higher Education ••• access makes dealing with treacheries trivial. The addition of new hotness like Antikythera, Alton O'Connell and Forensic Kit make perfect sense. A like and a favourite from me!
My only thought is there's a lot of assets to play here, so your asset engine will take a while to build up. A few simple changes would be "I'll take that!" in the place of Nimble (allowing you to play item assets actionlessly and at a discount), and possibly one copy of Unearth the Ancients •• for a Pathfinder (the card draw here seems reasonable, so while two Pathfinder will help you find a copy faster, I think you only really need one in play to help with Monty's ability). These should get you up and running a little bit more quickly.
