Nathaniel Cho Starter Deck

Nathaniel is a combo-heavy fighter who uses events that deal damage to dispatch enemies one after the other. Few can stand two to two with the amount of damage he can consistently deal. As an experience boxer with street smarts, Nathaniel has an impressive repertoire of events, like Monster Slayer and One-Two Punch, that he can use to beat down even the toughest of enemies.

Naturally, Nathaniel's weapon of choice is a pair of Boxing Gloves. In addition to giving you a combat boost while fighting, this item is integral to the deck as it helps you find a steady number of events that can trigger Nathaniel's ability. If you don't have Boxing Gloves in your opening hand, spending actions to draw cards is often a good idea to either find them or to get more events that deal damage.

After defeating an enemy, follow up by drawing 2 cards with Glory, using Boxing Gloves to get a Spirit event, or discovering 1 clue with Grete Wagner. You can also outmaneuver an enemy by playing Dodge to cancel its attack, then swiftly hitting back with lethal Counterpunch

Nathaniel's brother, Randall, always looks out for his younger sibling. When Nathaniel gets roughed up of needs motivation, Randall can heal him or equip him with his Boxing Gloves for another go.

One theme Guardians are known for is teamwork. Cards like Stand Together and Safeguard exemplify this by giving other players resources or protecting them from enemies. During solo play, these two cards are best used by committing them to skill tests, and then cutting them from the deck once you accumulate some experience.

Upgrading Nathaniel Cho

This starter deck has a variety of upgrades that will make Nathaniel an even more impressive fighter. One strategy for leveling up Nathaniel is to upgrade his existing cards to higher-level versions. Boxing Gloves (level 3) is a great example of how much stronger higher level cards are, and is a good option for your first purchase. Counterpunch (level 2) and "Get over here!" (level 2) provide various benefits compared to their level 0 counterparts, and make Boxing Gloves even better. Level 5 is often the ultimate version of a card, and One-Two Punch (level 5) is Nathaniel's spectacular finishing move: it can deal a total of 6 damage (using his ability) for a single action and only 2 resources! And if you reveal an during an attack, you can bring this powerhouse back and play it again.

One of Nathaniel's deficiencies is discovering clues. One strategy for upgrading him, especially for solo play, is to focus on cards that discover clues and have intellect icons, such as Evidence! (level 1), Lesson Learned (level 2), and Grete Wagner (level 3). This helps turn the pure fighter into a more versatile investigator.

Some upgrades, like Dynamite Blast (level 3) and Taunt (level 3), work particularly well in multiplayer, where it's more likely that numerous enemies will cluster at a single location. When playing with a group. you may want to prioritize purchasing these cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I use Boxing Gloves to search for a Spirit event after defeating an enemy, and the card I add to my hand says "play after you defeat an enemy," can I then play it?

Yes. You are still in the same timing window, so as long as the card's other costs are paid and its other restrictions are met, you can play t after adding it to your hand with Boxing Gloves.
