Deck Strategy
This is a spell slinging and spell recursion deck mostly - we are loading 15 events in it that we hope to see more than once using Parallel Agnes' ability to reshuffle them back to the deck. Our spells will be able to dish out damage (Spectral Razor, Storm of Spirits), grab clues (Read the Signs), give us extra soak (Spectral Shield, Deny Existence), say "No" to the mythos (Ward of Protection, Deny Existence) and even grab us some economy (Voice of Ra, Uncage the Soul).
Notably, I don't think this deck will benefit from having extra copies of the spells (using the alternate back deckbuilding rules) so I don't think I'll be using it much. The main reason for this is that I don't want this deck to grow any larger for consistency, and I rather have a small deck with less (but more powerful) spells, than dilute it with lower level versions that might show up when I needed the other ones. Spell recursion in this deck is a non-issue thanks to Parallel Agnes' ability.
Of course we need to support the spell slinging machine, and here's how we plan to do it:
- We will be using Agnes's ability a lot, so we need to soak that 1 Damage somehow (using Spectral Shield ideally)
- We will use Breath of the Sleeper and Eyes of the Dreamer to act as charges for the Spectral Shield (and we can also use them to attack with our if needed for 1 damage or 1 clue without spending any charges, so we don't really need Wither or Sixth Sense in this deck)
- We will be using Arcane Initiate to find our spells.
- Our hand slots will be taken by Spirit Athame and Sword Cane (2). The former will help us pass our spell tests more comfortably (and also deal with pesky rats without having to use any spells, charges or boosts). The latter will be a nice tool to use in tandem with our spell slinging and use our to attack or evade if needed.
- Binder's Jar will give us a way to prevent damage from certain enemies - but the main reason for it being here is to give us extra Arcane Slots that we can fill with Blur and Brand of Cthugha. Ideally we want to have all of our asset spells ready as both charges for the Spectral Shield or for their core functionality.
To fill out our Flex role better, we've also included Ward of Protection to help our team mates (and earn brownie points with them once Dark Memory shows up and everyone looses a turn - sorry!)
Upgrades
- Blur > Blur (4) - a banger of a card that deals with immediate problems and gives us a bunch of actions as well.
- Brand of Cthugha > Brand of Cthugha (4): use 1 action to deal 3 damage is amazing. It's also really good to have that many charges, since if we have our enchanted Dragon Pole we can deal damage that way and keep the charges available for Spectral Shield.
- Read the Signs > Read the Signs (2): Returning this to your hand means you don't need to wait to re-draw it from Agnes' ability which might be good to keep slinging!
- Spectral Razor > Spectral Razor (2): Same as Read the Signs!
- Deny Existence > Deny Existence (5): This card is just absolutely ridiculous and being able to recur it with Parallel Agnes is just mental. Definitely a late campaign grab for flashiness, but could be grabbed earlier if you feel the deck is working well enough and you don't need some of the previous upgrades as much.
I would probably focus on upgrading either Read the Signs or Spectral Razor depending on how the deck shapes up and the role it needs to fill (Fighter Flex vs Cluever Flex)
New Cards
Some cards that might be impactful for this build that you may want to add:
- A second copy of Prophetic - it will pay for your Asset Spells and it will also boost any tests on them (and your spell events too!)
- Eye of Ghatanothoa + Relic Hunter: This is mostly a "wouldn't it be cool to have" combo, definitely low priority, but it might be really good especially since your mere presence in the team is already going to cost everyone a turn eventually.
- Counterspell: I think it's a massively powerful effect which can also be incredible support. I'd probably struggle to come up with what to remove, but if I had Prophetic x2 already, maybe you could forgo some of your Spell Assets and add these to the deck.
