FAQs

(from the official FAQ or responses to the official rules question form)

Q: I have a question about Marion's ability timing. Suppose I am playing as Marion and have an enemy engaged with me. I provoke an attack of opportunity. I use Counterpunch (2) in response to that, which occurs "before resolving the attack." I do not defeat the enemy. I trigger Marion's investigator ability to draw and then play another event. Is that second event still "before resolving the attack?" Does this mean that (for example) I could play another Fight event that does not normally have a "before resolving the attack" timing (ex: Monster Slayer) to defeat the enemy and therefore not take the attack? Thank you! A: Yes. To walk through it: you’d trigger/initiate the attack of opportunity, then immediately play Counterpunch (2), then after resolving the event trigger and resolve Marion’s ability to allow you to play a new event such as Monster Slayer and resolve it, and only after that would you resolve the attack of opportunity if the enemy is still in play. (This is an example of a “nested sequence.”) (Ruling, May 2025)

Reviews

Marion is very broad in terms of ways to build her deck, so in writing this review I'll provide an overview rather than the impossible task of summarising ever possible deck style you can make with her. I've broken this down into a couple of sections, and provided a couple of exemplar decks around specific concepts.

Deckbuilding considerations:

I hope the review has been useful in showcasing what you can do with Marion. In particular, I think there's been so many good and distinct Marion decks already that there's a lot of inspiration to draw on! Let me know your thoughts.

@MrGoldbee lol at the mental image of that! — HungryColquhoun · 13216
That Detective is so stubborn that he Denies the Existence of an amputation... and it works. — DrOGM · 25
I wonder If her ability triggers an attack of opportunity, when playing the second event (lets say emergency cache)?)? — muzi · 1
I believe it doesn't trigger attacks of opportunity since it is Fast. — AndersGabrielsson · 1

I just want to add that "fast" event cards, which can be played under any circumstances, work wonders for Marion. They allow her to combo other events in any flexible timings without spending actions. Notable mentions include "Get behind me!", Tempt Fate, and Trusted (attached to an ally). This strategy lets you chain actions together to achieve meaningful outcomes. I recommend packing some cheap, condition-less "fast" event cards in her deck.

Tempt fate is a good catch. — MrGoldbee · 1521
"Get behind me!" comes with the condition, that other gators want to take an AoO, though. (Unless you want to use your card just for the extra action.) Note, that Marion's ability only work during her turn, even if events could be played out of it. — Susumu · 385
